World Cancer Day is a campaign built to resonate, inspire change and mobilize impact-drive action against cancer burden worldwide. Through education, raising awareness and by pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action, it aims to save millions of preventable cancer deaths each year. The campaign’s theme “IAmAndIWill” urges people to pledge their personal commitment against cancer today to impact the future.
Cancer remains the second leading cause of death worldwide and its incidence is rising, with 70% of cancer deaths occurring in low-to-middle income countries and representing $1.16 trillion in total annual economic cost. If detected early enough, many forms of the disease can be effectively treated, thus the importance of its prevention and early diagnosis. Our ultimate vision is to prevent and provide cures for cancer in all its forms. As no single intervention is likely to achieve this, we seek to comprehensively understand the disease, its complexities and its impact on patients. By giving our researchers the freedom to explore the cutting edge of science and technology, we deepen our understanding of the biology and immunology of cancer to make this vision a reality sooner.
Roche and UICC have been working in partnership since 2008 to reduce the global cancer burden and improve the lives of patients. As part our commitment to increasing access to sustainable cancer care, we became the lead industry partner for UICC’S City Cancer Challenge in 2018, working with 20 cities by 2020 to develop and pilot a model of engagement for the initiative that can be scaled up globally. Beyond funding, we will share our health system knowledge, global stakeholder network and business planning expertise. Roche has also been a proud supporter of World Cancer Day for many years, working alongside UICC to raise awareness and drive action that will increase our ability to address cancer.
Currently over half of the world’s population lives in cities, with 95% of urban expansion in the next decades anticipated to take place in lower and middle-income countries.
