Roche’s presence at OSSA: Advancing local retinal care

Roche demonstrated a strong and purposeful presence at the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA) Congress, reinforcing its commitment to supporting the local ophthalmology community and advancing retinal care through meaningful engagement, education, and collaboration. Not only did the organisation showcase its leading role in retinal health therapies, but it also curated opportunities for practical learning and stronger connections with specialists across South Africa.
A key highlight of Roche’s presence at OSSA was the engagement of international retinal expert Professor Robin Hamilton with local ophthalmologists through one-on-one “Meet the Expert” sessions. Doctors were able to discuss real-world treatment approaches, explore data interpretation, and address publishing considerations and clinical protocols within the realities of the South African healthcare system. His contribution was particularly impactful, as it bridged the gap between international clinical trial outcomes and local practice.

Lauren Sekhuthe, Medical Manager for Ophthalmology, highlighted the importance of this kind of engagement and the need for locally driven evidence in ophthalmology: “Locally-driven data informs best practice within the intravitreal injection landscape for better patient outcomes through evidence-based decision-making, specific to a South African context.” Her insight reflects a key theme raised during the congress: while international research remains valuable, there is a strong appetite within the South African ophthalmology community for locally generated evidence to strengthen decision-making, patient outcomes, and long-term treatment planning.
In addition, Roche’s highly attended symposium, chaired by Dr Kavitha Naidu, a specialist ophthalmologist and ophthalmic surgeon specialising in retinal surgery and diabetic eye disease, highlighted the continued interest in retinal innovation and the need for ongoing scientific engagement within the ophthalmology community. The symposium provided a platform for exchanging clinical insights while enabling ophthalmologists to deepen their understanding of evolving treatment approaches.
Furthermore, demonstrated responsiveness to practical feedback from the local market. As part of its sustainability focus, Roche showcased a “going green” initiative, introducing reusable packaging boxes for its leading brand, and a commitment to sustainable and responsible healthcare practices.
OSSA reaffirmed the importance of partnerships in improving patient outcomes. Through scientific exchange, practical support tools, and expert-led discussions, OSSA was both meaningful and educational, supporting South Africa’s ophthalmology community and advancing retinal care through collaboration, innovation, and ongoing engagement.
