On the 27th of August 2024, 3 Neurologists from South Africa accompanied by the Roche Neuroscience Medical Enabler, headed to Germany to attend a Preceptorship on Multiple Sclerosis at Josephs Hospital, Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany. This facility is internationally recognized for its research strengths in religious studies, materials research, neuroscience, plasma research, protein research, as well as numerous other areas.
On arrival in Germany, they were joined by other Roche affiliates (Slovensko and Czech Republic) and their Neurologists, who were also keen to join the South African team for the preceptorship.
Over a period of 2 days they participated in a series of engagements and lecturers on various topics on MS, NMOSD (Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder) and MOGAD (Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody Disease), ranging from new diagnostic equipment,
biomarkers, clinical trial updates, as well as to the current treatment landscape and future therapies.
Dr Elizabeth Steyn, Specialist Neurologist in Centurion, South Africa, had the opportunity to present a difficult MS case. This provided the opportunity for robust discussion and best practice sharing amongst the Neurologists shared management approaches for this particular case. Dr Steyn was further invited by Bochum University to collaborate on a clinical trial that is currently in progress for NMOSD. Dr Steyn is very passionate about NMOSD and is keen to participate in this trial.
