The African Legal Awards, hosted by Law.com International and partnered with the Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa (CCASA), recognise exceptional achievements from Africa’s legal elite. The awards are judged by a panel of experts from various industries and geographies, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of each entry.
The team competed against teams from various industries and sectors and the "Risk and Compliance Department of the Year" award criteria included:
Legal expertise and innovation
Strategic vision
Teamwork
Client satisfaction
Employee development
Contribution to the success of the business
Efficiency
The award-winning team, led by Michael Maistry, Head of Legal, Compliance, Privacy, and Risk, includes Taryn Moonsamy, Senior Legal and Compliance Manager, and Palesa Malolo, Legal Graduate. Their proactive approach to risk and compliance, using an integrated compliance model, was a key factor in their recognition. This model brings together colleagues from various functions within the organisation into a compliance committee, divided into risk, monitoring, and advisory categories.
Proactive Approach: The integrated compliance model disseminates risk awareness and compliance thinking within the business and allows for multiple inputs in determining risks, and opportunities, and managing compliance issues.
Agile and Relevant: The team utilises an agile approach to compliance, addressing issues through "coffee chats" that keep topics relevant to business challenges and develop the organisation according to its needs.
Team Expertise: Michael brings experience from different pharma companies and exposure to Sub-Sahara Africa, along with deep business knowledge. Taryn, as an experienced professional, lends her skills to networks beyond South Africa and ensures the learnings from her exchange are utilised in the Southern African markets. Palesa, the most recent and valuable addition to the team, has upskilled in less than two years and is firmly entrenched in the organisation and its needs, ensuring greater efficiencies in delivery and foresight.
Earlier this year, Michael Maistry was also recognised by the Legal 500’s GC Powerlist South Africa 2024, further cementing his standing in the legal community. The GC Powerlist identifies and celebrates the most influential in-house lawyers and legal teams in business today.
Additionally, Michael Maistry was nominated for the "General Counsel of the Year" award at the African Legal Awards 2024, highlighting the concrete and measurable ways in which he has contributed to the success of Roche South Africa across the full spectrum of in-house responsibility.
This recognition is not only a win for the team but a milestone for Roche South Africa. It underscores our reputation as a trustworthy and reliable organisation with a strong legal and compliance backbone. It highlights the strength and capability of our legal, compliance, and risk functions, reinforcing our commitment to excellence and integrity.
Please join us in congratulating Michael Maistry, Taryn Moonsamy, and Palesa Malolo for this truly remarkable achievement.
